Our Commitment

Big Sky Farms is committed to conducting all activities in an environmentally sound and sustainable manner. Ensuring our operations do not negatively impact the environment or become a source of pollution is a top priority and core value for us, and we will meet or exceed all regulatory requirements at all times. Our reputation is important to us, and we value the good relationships and trust we have built with our neighbours and in the communities in which we live and operate.

Our Practices

Our commitment to the environment begins long before any construction takes place. Topographical surveys are conducted to ensure our operations will not harm surface water supplies. We commission detailed geotechnical studies to ensure aquifers will not be harmed and that soil conditions are right for manure storage.

Safe and effective nutrient management is a cornerstone of our environmental program. Manure is an excellent source of nutrients for both crops and forages but must be used wisely to be effective. Manure management plans ensure all the nutrients produced by our operations can be used safely and effectively as fertilizer by our farmer partners.

New technologies such as GPS and GIS are being rapidly adopted to further refine application techniques and to ensure appropriate set backs from environmentally sensitive areas.

Big Sky Farms is committed to continuous improvement and strives to be a leader in environmental stewardship. We are always on the look-out for new approaches to nutrient management and environmental protection, and will adopt feasible, effective new technologies as they become available.
